All of the accompanying pictures are a sample of work done by Jim Martins, an established sculptor in South Devon.
Jim has been carving stone for over 12 years now and has worked on many pieces which are presently on public display.

Jim started relief carving in slate, usually Cornish Delabole Slate but soon explored different slates from other areas of the country. He undertook a lettering course with the Orton trust which encouraged more discipline in his detailed carving.

After a course in stone masonry undertaken at Corsham in Wiltshire, Jim worked more “in the round” in limestone and later in Sandstone.

Jim worked for several months with another sculptor in The Cotswold's, “roughing out” seven statue figures to within 5mm of the final finish; most of which are to be viewed in churches in the south of England.

After hundreds of carvings, the quality of his work has progressed to a high standard, he wishes to make his sculpture more available to be viewed by the public at large.
Clients with open land and estates are the usual customers for Jim's larger sculptures, along with corporations with budgets set aside for artwork as new business premises are being acquired. He also has provided many smaller works for private households.

Jim's workshop is situated in a beautiful town on the Devon coast and is known by word of mouth to his faithful clients that have been rewarded with his worthwhile carvings for years.

The fact that his stone works will probably last for “a thousand years” is a point that Jim very much holds in the forefront of his mind as he commits himself to the laborious hand carving of his pieces.

Jim is a much travelled man with many experiences in life that influence his designs.
Bringing “a stone to life” is always an important basis to a theme, often assisted by more precise requirements given by his clients. These are then interpreted into a long lasting and powerful stone image.
He is able to travel where ever necessary in order to undertake work on location if necessary.
