Biography
Jim started relief carving Cornish Delabole Slate in 1996 but soon explored different types of stone from other areas of the country. He undertook a lettering course with the Orton trust which encouraged more discipline in his detailed carving.
After a later course in stone masonry undertaken at Corsham in Wiltshire, Jim worked more “in the round” in limestone and later in Sandstone.
Jim worked for several months with another fine sculptor in The Cotswold's, “roughing out” seven statue figures to within 5mm of the final finish; most of which are to be viewed in churches in the south of England. Images of this time are in "Works Done In Partnership" in the navigation bar.
After hundreds of carvings to a high standard, he wishes to make his sculpture more available to be viewed by the public at large.
Clients with open land and are the usual customers for Jim's larger sculptures, along with corporations requiring quality sculpture to enhance their properties.
He also has provided hundreds of works for private households.
Jim's workshop is situated in a beautiful town on the Devon coast and he is known by word of mouth to his faithful clients that have been rewarded with his worthwhile carvings for years.
The fact that his stone works will probably last for “a thousand years” is a point that Jim very much holds in the forefront of his mind as he commits himself to the skilled and laborious hand carving of his pieces.
Jim is a much travelled man with many experiences in life that influence his designs.
Bringing “a stone to life” is always an important basis to a theme, often assisted by more precise requirements given by his clients. These are then interpreted into a long lasting and powerful stone image.
He is able to travel where ever necessary in order to undertake work on location if necessary, but often the work is done in his workshop.
Any enquiries are dealt with promptly and personally.
